PIMSI

What is PIMSI?

PIMSI is combination of two specialized forms of sperm selection (PICSI and IMSI).

In PIMSI sperms are added to the PICSI solution (hyaluronan) substance mimicking the natural environment of the outer wall of the egg. Then the sperm that get selected from this method, are further selected through the IMSI process where an embryologist selects sperms that have the best morphology under a very high magnification microscope. Eggs are then injected by the selected sperm just like with ICSI.

Who should consider PIMSI?

PIMSI may be considered by couples experiencing male factor infertility, particularly when issues such as poor sperm morphology, and/or poor DNA fragmentation are present. It may also be beneficial for those who have had previous failed ICSI cycles or when sperm quality is a significant concern.

What does the research say?

There have been no studies specifically investigating the success rates of PIMSI. Based on existing research on each technique individually, neither PICSI nor IMSI has consistently shown significant improvements in fertilization rates, embryo quality, or pregnancy outcomes compared to standard ICSI. Many studies are of low quality or have inconsistent results, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions. myfertility’s take on PIMSI

PIMSI combines two advanced sperm selection methods, potentially enhancing the chances of selecting high-quality sperm for fertilization. However, like many add-ons in fertility treatment, it’s important to understand that the evidence supporting its effectiveness is not yet strong or consistent. Since we do not believe that either PICSI or IMSI on their own are worth the extra financial burden based on the limited evidence of their effectiveness, the same applis to the combination of the two.

When you're going through a challenging and emotional journey like fertility treatment, it can be tempting to try everything available. However, it's crucial to remember that more isn't always better. Over-promises on the benefits of new technologies or "add-ons" might not deliver meaningful results. That’s why we believe that being well-informed about your fertility treatment options can significantly improve your infertility treatment journey.

It's important to consult with a fertility specialist to determine the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.
