What is AI sperm selection 

Sperm selection during ICSI is a crucial step in the ICSI process, one that requires a lot of embryologist skill and experience as it plays a crucial role in fertilisation outcome and embryo development.

AI Sperm selection uses machine learning and automated image recognition to add a new layer of objectivity and precision for sperm selection by the embryologist during ICSI. It allows the the assessment of additional parameters like motion patterns of the sperm and speed to help the embryologist select the best sperm for ICSI.

Who should consider it? 

AI Sperm Assessment can be beneficial for anyone using ICSI (or its derivatives like IMSI, PICSI and PIMSI). It allows the assessment of parameters we couldn’t assess before which can also help identify subtle issues that may not be detected before. 

What does the research say? 

Since AI Sperm Assessment is a relatively new technology, the amount of high-quality research available is still limited. While initial studies are promising¹, showing that AI can provide more consistent and detailed sperm analysis, further research is needed to fully understand its impact on treatment outcomes. 

Safety 

AI Sperm Selection is non-invasive and completely safe. It involves analyzing the sperm using advanced computer algorithms by the embryologist during ICSI, with no additional steps or interventions beyond what is required for a standard ICSI.
