What is conventional IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a broad term used for many infertility treatments, with conventional IVF being one of the primary methods for fertilizing eggs with sperm in a laboratory setting.

Conventional IVF is the mixing of the eggs and sperm in a petri-dish and leaving them in an incubator, usually overnight, for fertilisation to occur. With this method, the biologically healthier sperm should fertilise the eggs. Once the sperm fertilises the egg, an embryo is formed, which is then cultured and monitored in the lab.

Why is conventional IVF Performed? 

IVF is primarily performed to help individuals and couples facing infertility achieve a successful pregnancy. It is often considered when other fertility treatments—such as ovarian induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), fertility-enhancing supplements, or surgical interventions—have failed or are not suitable. Some common indications for IVF include:

• Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes in women
• Unexplained infertility
• Endometriosis
• Advanced maternal age
• Genetic disorders requiring preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)

Is Conventional IVF Right for You?

For instance, in cases of male infertility, IVF alone has shown less success compared to Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
