What does the research say? 

Research into AI Embryo Assessment is ongoing, but early studies have shown promising results. For example, one study found that when AI models used both images and clinical information, their accuracy in selecting viable embryos was significantly higher (81.5% accuracy) compared to manual assessment by embryologists (51% accuracy)¹.

However, there are also important considerations and potential drawbacks. An ongoing study by a team at University College London (UCL) has highlighted a potential bias in AI embryo selection, where AI models may favor male (XY) embryos over female (XX) embryos²! This raises ethical concerns about the natural balance of embryo selection and emphasizes the need for ongoing evaluation of these technologies to ensure they are fair and unbiased.

AI Embryo Assessment is a safe and non-invasive technique that does not require any additional steps beyond what is normally done during IVF. Since it involves analyzing images of embryos rather than directly manipulating them, there is no added risk to the embryos themselves.
