Embryoglue

What is Embryoglue?

EmbryoGlue is a culture medium enriched with hyaluronate, a substance that can potentially improve the chances of an embryo implanting in the uterus. Before the embryo is transferred back to your uterus in an IVF cycle, it is placed in the hyaluronate-enriched solution, Embryoglue. The EmbryoGlue acts like a bridge between the embryo and the uterine lining, promoting better adherence to the endometrium, which is crucial for successful implantation.

This process is entirely carried out in the lab, so there are no additional steps or actions required from you.

Who should consider it?

EmbryoGlue may be particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced recurrent implantation failure. It is also often considered for patients who have had previous unsuccessful IVF attempts despite transferring high-quality embryos.

What does the research say?

The effectiveness of EmbryoGlue is still a subject of debate within the scientific community. According to the HFEA, the use of hyaluronate-enriched pre-transfer culture medium is rated "amber" because the evidence on its effectiveness is mixed. Some studies suggest it can improve treatment outcomes, while others show no significant difference1.

A significant randomized control trial involving 550 women aimed to determine whether the use of EmbryoGlue in IVF cycles would improve clinical outcomes such as live birth and pregnancy rates found that the clinical outcomes were similar between the groups that used EmbryoGlue and those that did not, indicating no significant improvement in live birth or pregnancy rates associated with EmbryoGlue use2.

However, another study focused on a more specific group of patients—those who had experienced recurrent miscarriages. This study suggested that EmbryoGlue might offer some benefits for these couples, showing a modest (yet not statistically significant) improvement in outcomes when EmbryoGlue was used during the embryo transfer process3.

Safety

EmbryoGlue has a favorable safety profile. It’s considered safe, with no additional risks to the patient or the potential baby been identified yet 3
