Embryogen

What is EmbryoGen

EmbryoGen is a specialized embryo culture medium that contains natural proteins called GM-CSF, that are found in the female reproductive tract. It is designed to better mimic the environment that occurs around conception in the female reproductive system. GM-CSF proteins claim to support early embryo growth and development in many ways. From Increasing the number of cells in the embryo to enhancing the chances of successful implantation of embryos in the uterus1. Now incorporating these natural proteins, EmbryoGen has gained popularity in IVF treatments.

Who Should Consider EmbryoGen

  • Repeated IVF failures2: If you've undergone multiple IVF cycles without success, EmbryoGen could potentially offer additional support for your embryos.
  • Recurrent miscarriage2: whether you had history of miscarriages before IVF treatments or after, EmbryoGen can potentially improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy
  • Poor embryo development2: If your previous IVF cycles have resulted in embryos that didn't develop as expected, EmbryoGen can potentially support healthier embryo growth.
  • Increased maternal age2: Women over 38 may consider this treatment to provide enhanced support for their embryo during the crucial early stages of development

What does the research say?

When considering whether to include EmbryoGen as an add-on in your IVF treatment, it’s essential to review research on its effectiveness. Studies on EmbryoGen-supplemented cultures generally suggest improved outcomes, though some research indicates that this difference may not be statistically significant, while other studies reported significant improvements. Two large studies—one involving 1,332 patients across 14 fertility clinics1 and another with 430 women3—found significant increases in ongoing pregnancy and live birth rates with EmbryoGen, including a rise from 41.8% to 52.6% in the second study.

In contrast, a smaller study4 with 100 patients showed only a slight increase in live birth rates (34% vs. 22% in standard culture media), but the difference was not statistically significant, likely due to the smaller sample size and lower study power

Despite these promising results, researchers agree that more large-scale trials are needed to provide clear evidence of EmbryoGen’s effectiveness, especially considering the additional cost.
